According to the lore established by the manga written by Riichiro Inagaki and illustrated by Boichi, Dr. Stone, on January 4 the birthday of the character Senkuu Ishigami, protagonist of the franchise, is celebrated. Since the date coincided with the launch of the nineteenth compilation volume, the writer Riichiro Inagaki commemorated both events: “The volume number 19 of Dr. Stone will be on sale on January 4 which, by the way, is also the day of the birthday of Senkuu, our protagonist. Inagaki and Boichi began publishing the manga in Shueisha publisher's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine in March 2017. The publisher published the 18th compiled volume on November 4, followed by the 19th on January 4 in Japan. The work recently surpassed 8.4 million copies in circulation.
The play inspired a 24-episode anime adaptation produced by TMS Entertainment studios, under the direction of Shinya Iino and scripts written by Yuichiro Kido, released in July 2019. Production for a second season is confirmed, and its premiere is scheduled. in Japan by January 14, 2021.
