Hunter x Hunter turns 800 days without a new chapter

The Twitter account @HxH_kyusai_bot, which keeps track of the pause of the manga written and illustrated by Yoshihiro Togashi, Hunter x Hunter, reported on February 2 that the work has reached 800 days without a new published chapter. The post inspired a response that went viral in Japan: “Thank you so much for keeping us posted. When I came to think that Togashi-sensei might take about 800 days to plan the next chapter, I really saw it in a positive light and was excited if that happened. Now, until Togashi-sensei resumes Hunter x Hunter, we will continue to be an account that lives on 100 yen meals a day.

The last sentence is a reference to the publication's account's own 'goal', the description of which reads: “An account that lives on 100 yen meals a day until Togashi-sensei decides to resume Hunter x Hunter. Rules: Health comes first, more now with the COVID-19 pandemic. Seasonings and coffee are not included in the monetary count. The account also shared its most recent meal, adhering to this principle.

Since August 2020, the series had broken its record for longest hiatus with a total of 81 issues in the magazine's absence, breaking its old record set between 2014 and 2016, with 79 issues. It should be noted that the time that more chapters were published serially was between editions 35 of 2011 and 16 of 2012, that is, 30 chapters.

Of course, while the update is already the bread and butter for fans, some can't help but express their concern for Togashi himself. The famous artist has impressive talent and works to his name, but his struggles with chronic back pain are common knowledge. Togashi has commented extensively on the problems that come from his back and how they are exacerbated by drawing. Therefore, the first priority for all fans should be the health of the author, even if that means walking hand in hand towards the 1,000 days without chapter mark. If One Piece just made it to chapter 1,000, Hunter x Hunter could take the same number and adapt it to a record of its own.

On the other hand, Hunter x Hunter is a manga series written and illustrated by Yoshihiro Togashi, who has published it in Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine since March 1998. The publisher has published a total of 36 compilation volumes to date. and the most recent chapter, number 390, was published on November 26, 2018.

The play inspired a first 62-episode anime adaptation produced by Nippon Animation Studios under the direction of Kazuhiro Furuhashi and scripts written by Nobuaki Kishima, released in October 1999. Subsequently, a second 148-episode anime adaptation produced by the studios. Madhouse, directed by Hiroshi Koujina and scripts written by Atsushi Maekawa and Tsutomu Kamishiro, premiered in October 2011.
