Nakama previously published the Isobe Isobee Monogatari: Ukiyo wa Tsurai yo manga in Weekly Shonen Jump magazine between October 2013 and October 2017. The manga inspired two anime adaptations and a stage play.

On the other hand, the magazine began its publication on August 1, 1968 with a biweekly serialization. The publication became weekly in 1969 and has been preserved in this form to date.

In the mid-1980s and into the mid-1990s, this magazine experienced its largest circulation numbers, with 6.53 million copies sold per week. However, in recent years this number has decreased to 1.6 million copies in 2019, derived from the digitization of content. Finally, Weekly Shonen Jump is listed as the best-selling comic / manga magazine in the world, having not long ago surpassed 7.5 billion copies sold since 1968.
