Makoto Shinkai explained how he managed to reference Precure within Tenki no Ko
During the first terrestrial broadcast of the successful 2019 animated film directed by Makoto Shinkai, Tenki no Ko (Weathering With You), through the television station TV Asahi, Japanese fans of the Pretty Cure (Precure) franchise rekindled the love that The film featured the classic 2004 series with cosplayers appearing at a convention similar to Comic Market (Comiket). In addition to the aforementioned terrestrial broadcast, Shinkai also explained how he managed to get Toei's characters to appear in a Toho movie.
In Tenki no Ko, two Pretty Cure (Precure) cosplayers hire the main characters to clear the rain that would jeopardize a Comiket-like convention at Tokyo Big Sight. In the first scene, not only the aforementioned cosplayers appear, but also Aqua from KonoSuba !, Hatsune Miku and even the legendary kaijuu, Godzilla.
Shinkai commented on the July 2019 radio show “MC Plus” that: “Tenki no Ko is a Toho movie and Pretty Cure, as everyone knows, is owned by Toei. The harsh truth is that there are some barriers that are impossible to cross. " Somehow, Shinkai managed to overcome the challenge. "With Toei's permission, I was able to make cosplayers appear playing the first generation of Pretty Cure," explained the director.
The reason Shinkai chose to have Pretty Cure referenced in the Tenki no Ko movie comes down to a simple argument: he's a fanatic. “I love Precure, so I really wanted to include him in the movie. Although I may have gone too far just for something I like! " Shinkai also noted that the Cure Black cosplayer was played by none other than Kana Hanazawa, but was not listed in the credits.
