"Oi" is a sweet sound heard (or read) many times throughout the Gintama franchise, but how many times did the main cast mention it? For the Shueisha publishing house, which published the complete manga series created by Hideaki Sorachi, decided to count each instance of the sentence of just two letters in the 77 volumes of the series. The publisher posted a video showing each of the cases, and the number easily surpassed 1,000 times.
At 1,888 times, "Oi" (and its derivatives) seems to be one of the most used greetings in Gintama. In fact, some photos of their entire research process were posted on the Weekly Shonen Jump Twitter account, showing a stack of compiled volumes of the manga with markers on each of them. The amount is such that you can tell that they ran out of the yellow markers and started using the pink ones.
Finally, the film Gintama: The Final was released in theaters in Japan on January 8 and is based on the end of the manga combined with original narrative elements. A two-episode special project, titled Gintama: The Semi-Final, will offer a prequel story to this feature film and aired in Japan on January 15 and 20.
