Since the implementation of electronic money and smart cards, it was only a matter of time before a company in Japan combined technology with the anime to allow people to "pay their anime products with another anime product." The first company that took the step was Sony, which is incorporating its RFID - Felica smart card into the Mahou Shoujo Madoka Madoka keychains.

While the user uses them to access trains in Tokyo, fellow technology on acrylic keychains is connected to the prepaid rechargeable electronic money system Rakuten EDY. The user loads the keychains of Madoka or Homura at any compatible ATM (the ATMs of the Seven-Eleven convenience stores have this charging system) and that is all, simply touch your favorite girl in a terminal with a logo of the brand and you will have made a payment.

Sony is using the Mahou Shoujo Madoka keychains as a public concept test to show that technology within the acrylic keychains works and can be used for other intellectual properties, even to the point of putting a query form on its official portal for the Companies interested in collaborating with their own productions.

While at this moment the keychains only work with the Sony Rakuten System, Sony Felica is used worldwide for contactless payments, transportation cards and as magnetic cards for universities and other organizations. Felica is widespread in Japan, Hong Kong and Indonesia, with some uses in Europe and the United States. This means that, although the Anime Keychains are currently only linked to a payment system, it does not mean that they can not be used for other functions in the future.

Synopsis of Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica

Madoka Kanami and Sayaka Miki are regular high school girls with regular lives, but all that changes when they meet Kyuubey, a cat-like creature, and with Homura Akemi, the new student transferred. Kyuubey offers a proposal: will grant any of his wishes and, in return, each of them will become a magic girl (Mahou Shoujo), obtaining the power to fulfill his dreams. However, Homura Akemi, who is already a girl Magic, urges them not to accept the offer, affirming that it is not as good as it sounds. Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica is a story of hope, despair and friendly, which deals with the difficulties of becoming and being a magic girl, and the great price that must be paid to make a dream come true.
