The Narcotics Control Board Office in the city of Bangkok in Thailand has auctioned around 300 anime figures seized during drug trafficking investigation cases, worth 1.5 million Thai baht (about $ 50,000).
Action figures from popular animations such as Naruto, Dragon Ball, Iron Man, Spider-Man, Transformers and Masked Rider, seized in drug investigation cases, have been auctioned by the Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB) in its first round of auctions this year.
The ONCB had classified the 286 items as unsuitable for extended storage, and prices for each item range from 200 to 35,000 Thai baht ($ 7 to $ 1,170). The most popular item in the auction was a full-scale figure of Luffy, the protagonist of the One Piece multimedia franchise, which came with a starting price of just 35,000 Thai bahts (about $ 1,170). In the end, the figure was sold to Mr. Chakrit Boonlapho, an enthusiast for these types of products, at a price of 111,000 Thai baht (about $ 3,700).
The auction event strictly followed health and safety protocols for the prevention of the spread of COVID-19, with temperature controls for all participants, who were required to wear masks. Hand sanitizers were provided at various locations within the facility. Finally, Justice Minister Somsak Thepsuthin said that some of these items were auctioned even though their associated cases were still open, as the items are deemed unsuitable for storage.
