Through his official Twitter account, Naughty Dog writer, creative director, programmer, and co-president Neil Druckmann, best known for his work on the Uncharted and The Last of Us video game franchises; answered the following question: "Hypothetical question: What established intellectual property would you like to convert to a video game?" Druckmann responded with five franchises, which included The Punisher, Half-Life, Ghost Rider, Hotline Miami, and Cowboy Bebop.
The original series had a total of 26 episodes originally aired in April 1998. The play inspired a manga adaptation by Cain Kuga, who published it in Kadokawa's Monthly Asuka Fantasy DX magazine between September 1997 and June 1998, with a total of two volumes.
In fact, when Cowboy Bebop first aired in the spring of 1998 on TV Tokyo in Japan, only episodes 2, 3, 7-15, and 18 were aired, concluding with a special recap known as “Yose Atsume Blues ”. The decision was due to the controversy generated by the transmission of Neon Genesis Evangelion, so much of the original series was removed from the air for violent content.
Subsequently, the WOWOW satellite channel took up the series in the fall of the same year and broadcast it in its entirety without censorship. Thus, Cowboy Bebop was not a ratings success in Japan, or could even have been considered a failure in its original broadcast, but it sold more than 19,000 DVD units upon release and won multiple awards for its cast. The West was the region where this series was most popular, after multiple channels, including Adult Swim, broadcast it over and over again establishing it as an immensely popular series for its references.
