Mahou Shoujo ni Akogarete goes into suspension

There is no doubt that the anime adaptation of "Mahou Shoujo ni Akogarete (Gushing over Magical Girls)" is one of the most popular series of the moment. Unfortunately, however, this popularity will not be able to be deposited in the original manga for the time being since it has been announced that serialization will enter an indefinite suspension.

In a press release, publisher Takeshobo reported the following:

  • "Thank you so much for reading "Mahou Shoujo ni Akogarete"! This month's update has been cancelled due to author Akihiro Ononaka falling ill. We will inform you as soon as serialization resumes and look forward to your continued support."

And of course, this suspension announcement didn't go unnoticed on the comment forums:

  • "Will the original author be okay?"
  • "Are you busy with all sorts of things because of the huge popularity of the anime adaptation? I hope that manga authors will continue to take great care of themselves."
  • "Manga authors have a shorter life expectancy. Doing nothing is not good."
  • "It's not uncommon for the original work to have a lot of interruptions, clunky drawings, and fewer pages when it becomes anime. So, from the point of view of fans of the original work, it's not like they welcome the anime adaptation with open arms. What they want to see most is the original work."

The anime adaptation has been airing since January 3 and is confirmed with a total of thirteen episodes, while Asahi Production studios is in charge of production. For his part, Ononaka began publishing manga through Takeshobo's Manga Life STORIA magazine in January 2019, where it is still in publication.

Synopsis of Gushing Over Magical Girls

Hiiragi Utena has always admired magical girls and fantasized about becoming a cool heroine who fights evil. That's why, when a doll-like figure approaches her one night, claiming that she has a magical power latent within her, she trembles with excitement. But her colorful dream is quickly cut short in an ironic turn of events when she transforms into a villain.

Uninterested in associating with the forces of evil, she tries to quit when a group of magical girls appear and declare war on her. A battle ensues and Hiiragi soon discovers that he enjoys inflicting pain on others as his true nature begins to emerge. "Mahou Shoujo ni Akogarete" follows Hiiragi in his new life as the leader of the villains, battling the magical girls and unleashing his newfound sadistic nature.
